Starting a business

New business IT checklist: what to set up first

Plan your domain, email, Microsoft 365, computers and website. A practical checklist for a new business, with decisions to make before paying for setup.

Start with what you already own

Before buying a package, list the domain, email account, computers and subscriptions you already use. Record who owns each account, who can administer it and when it renews. Keep passwords in a suitable password manager, separate from the planning sheet.

A new company may need everything. An established sole trader taking on a first employee may only need a business account, a prepared computer and shared files. The right scope depends on that starting point.

Your setup checklist

Decisions to make before the setup begins
ItemDecisionWhat to have at handover
DomainWhich name will the business use, and who owns the registration? An account controlled by the business, with renewal details.
EmailWho needs a mailbox? Do existing messages need to move?Tested mailboxes and a record of any migration work.
Microsoft 365Which apps and services does each person need?Your tenant details, licence record and agreed admin access.
ComputersCan existing devices do the job, or is equipment needed?Prepared devices, working sign-in and required applications.
Shared filesWhich documents should everyone see, and which are restricted?A documented folder structure and checked permissions.
WebsiteWhat should visitors learn, and how should they contact you?Approved pages, a tested enquiry route and account ownership.
Ongoing careWho handles new starters, faults, updates and renewals?A named responsibility for each system and agreed support terms.

Download the blank planning checklist (CSV). It has space for an owner, due date and status. It does not ask for passwords.

Separate setup fees from running costs

Ask for three totals: the one-off work, recurring subscriptions and equipment. Include domain renewal, email licences, hosting and any support plan. Compare the complete scope rather than two headline prices.

Microsoft subscriptions provide different combinations of apps and services, and licences are assigned to users. Check the actual product before assuming business email, desktop apps or device management is included. Microsoft explains how subscriptions and licences fit together.

If you already have email or files, include the assessment, transfer, testing and handover in the quote. An existing-system migration needs its own scope.

Which setup fits?

Northwired’s Day one setup covers the initial domain, email, Microsoft 365 and compatible PC setup. The website package adds a logo and website. Ongoing office support and website care can be arranged separately.

If you already have part of the setup, use the service builder to request only what you need. The selection becomes an enquiry; it does not place an order.
