Wi-Fi slow in one room? What to check before buying mesh
Compare Wi-Fi near the router and in the problem room, record the results and decide whether the next step is broadband support or a coverage check.
Compare two places using the same device
If a call works near the router but breaks up upstairs, start by recording that difference. Try the same task on the same device near the router and in the problem room, at roughly the same time. Note whether the issue is slow loading, a dropped connection or a particular app.
Then try another device if one is available. If only one laptop struggles in both places, the next check may be that device rather than the whole wireless network. These comparisons help narrow the problem; they do not prove its cause.
Keep a small test record
| Check | Near the router | Problem room |
|---|---|---|
| Device and time | Same laptop or phone; record the time. | Repeat soon afterwards. |
| Task | Try the affected website, call or app. | Try the same task. |
| Result | Note pauses, disconnections or normal operation. | Record what changes. |
| Other activity | Note large downloads or other busy devices. | Keep conditions as similar as practical. |
A speed-test result can be useful, but one number does not explain every call or connection problem. Keep the context with the result.
Look at the router’s position
Walls and other objects can weaken Wi-Fi. Ofcom recommends a central position, off the floor and away from obstructions and interfering equipment. If the router is hidden in a cupboard or behind large objects, check whether it can be placed more openly within the limits of its connections. Read Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance.
Keep a record of any change so you can compare it with the original position. Avoid a factory reset as a first experiment: it can remove settings needed to get back online.
Choose the next check
- Poor on several devices close to the router: check the provider’s service status and ask about the connection into the property.
- Good close by, poor further away: a coverage and placement check is a useful next step.
- Poor on one device only: compare that device’s software, connection and behaviour with a working one.
- Only one app is affected: check whether the app or service reports a problem.
A mesh system may help with coverage, but choose equipment after checking the router, layout and where the problem happens. More boxes are not automatically the answer.
For a Northwired Wi-Fi visit, send your postcode, router or mesh model if known, the affected rooms and your short test record. Equipment is quoted separately. See Wi-Fi and mesh setup in North London.
